Karting Question of the Week #4: Karting in the rain

This week’s question was: "What’s your number one focus in the rain?"
This one got a mix of answers, from detailed to simple, which feels pretty accurate for rain driving.
It’s one of those things that sounds straightforward, but gets complicated quickly once you’re out on track.
What Drivers Said
"Where are the tires catching anything, especially on slick tires."
This is all about awareness. Grip isn’t where you expect it to be, so you’re constantly searching for it. Painted lines, rubbered-in sections, and even small patches of water can completely change how the kart behaves.
“Smooth, slow inputs.”
In low grip conditions, smoothness becomes everything. Sharp inputs usually cost you grip, so the more controlled you are, the more the kart can work underneath you.
“When you find the grip, use it. It's only an advantage if you exploit it.”
Finding grip is one thing, but committing to it is what actually makes the difference. Hesitation usually costs more than it saves.
“Lines 🔥”
Short, but important. The usual racing line is the most dangerous place to be in the wet. Finding a different line with more grip and overcoming muscle memory is key.
“Staying dry 😂 but depending on how “bad” the track “needs” to get racing in, we focus on killing tires with chemical 🤣”
A bit of humor, but there’s truth in it. Conditions can change quickly, and sometimes what works early in the day won’t work later on.
“Staying on track 😁”
Again with the wisecracks 🤣 But seriously, in the rain keeping the kart on the track consistently is half the battle.
What We're Seeing
Across all the responses, a few themes stand out:
Be smooth with your inputs
Look for grip instead of assuming it’s there
Be willing to change your line
Commit when you find something that works
Drivers who handle rain well are ones who adjust. They don’t try to drive the same way they would in the dry. They pay attention, adapt, and work with what the track is giving them.
Another karting question of the week will be posted soon. If you’ve got a different take on driving in the rain, feel free to share your favourite tricks for driving in the rain in the comments. There’s always more to learn, especially when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
